Borrowing the Keys to KITT

July 30, 2008
By chad

For Zipcar adventure #2, I took the chance to drive a hybrid. Zipcar has many Priuses (Prii? Priora? What is the plural form of Prius anyway??) but they don’t live very close to Alexandria, so I opted for “Corie,” a Civic Hybrid that lives at the Braddock Metro station. Like many people, I usually...

Called in a received my lab and sestamibi scan results from the doctors office’s lab line.  My serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels are still elevated.  My sestamibi scan revealed nothing.   Dr. Selvaggi wants to see me again in 3 months.  At least we’re not rushing straight to exploratory chest surgery.  I’m not going...

Zipcar – Maiden Voyage!

July 25, 2008
By chad

Today I drove for the first time since starting the ZipCar Low-Car Diet. I had some errands to run, so I took out Ashely, a cute little Scion xA… The car reminded me of my old Toyota Matrix, only slightly miniaturized. At first I had some difficulty getting my card to scan so the...

This afternoon I dropped off my application to be an Election Official with the City of Alexandria!  I will get to set up polling equipment, verify voter registration, demonstrate voting machines, hand out “I voted!” stickers, close the precinct, and help certify the results.  From 5am-7pm on election day.  It’s going to be a...

July 22, 2008
By melissa

Back in May we got a letter from the IRS saying that we owed $372+interest and fees in our taxes.  That $327 is the exact amount we owed this year, and it was withdrawn from our savings account on April 8th.  The first time I called their customer service number, the woman I spoke...

The FSOT

July 17, 2008
By melissa

I took the new Foreign Service Officer Test today.  Well, at least the written part. My structured resume was submitted as a part of the registration process, and while I’m a step closer to the Oral Assessment, there’s still quite a way to go. This time, the test was given at an ACT test...

Happy Birthday Alexandria!

Happy Birthday Alexandria!

The City of Alexandria celebrated its 259th birthday on Saturday with fireworks! The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra performed a free “Big Band” show prior, then the fireworks soundtrack with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Marines from Quantico even provided cannon support! But before all of the fireworks, there was cake! Mayor Euille gave me a cupcake and...

bagpipes!

July 11, 2008
By melissa

Chad and I went for a walk down King Street last night. It was really nice out, and we even managed to avoid Pop’s ice cream shop, even though every other person on the street had an ice cream cone in their hands. The puppies were out in full force. It seemed like everyone...

They always want my blood…

July 10, 2008
By melissa

I saw Dr. Selvaggi (my endocrinologist) today.  It went pretty much as expected.  Dr. Purkert wrote her a very long letter telling her everything about my surgery and his recommendations.  Basically, I get to have another Setamibi scan.  Yaay – I love lying in a hospital gown while a big mechanical circle whirls around...
